The Salvation Army began its work in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1882, led by Major Frederick Tucker along with Veerasoriya, a Sri Lankan convert who came to India to spread the love and compassion of Jesus. At that time, Bombay served as the capital of the Bombay province, which included Gujarat and Maharashtra. The first headquarters in India was established in a rented building in Khatwadi.
Among the early converts was Walter Keil, a burgher from Ceylon, who adopted the name Yesu Patham and soon became engaged in full-time service. He was the first officer in the territory to be admitted to the Order of the Founder. From these modest beginnings, the work of God expanded in Bombay Province.
Different administrative models were experimented with for the work in Gujarat and Maharashtra until the India Western Territory was established in 1921. The evangelistic efforts in Gujarat commenced following an invitation from Ranipur village near Ahmedabad.
