Staff Captain Deva Sundaram

Pioneer of The Salvation Army in South‑Eastern India

Portrait of Major Deva Sundaram

Major Deva Sundaram, later promoted to Staff Captain, stands as one of the most influential early leaders of The Salvation Army in India. His life marks the beginning of the Army’s mission in South‑Eastern India, a movement that would transform communities across Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry for generations.

A Life‑Changing Vision (1892)

On 27 May 1892, at a place known as Medicine Hill near Nagercoil in the Kanyakumari district, Sundaram experienced a powerful spiritual vision while praying and fasting with three fellow officers. This moment is widely recognised as the official launch of The Salvation Army’s work in what is now the India South‑Eastern Territory.

From Sudalaiyandi to Deva Sundaram

Before his conversion, he was known as Mr. Sudalaiyandi, the son of Mr. Sudalaimadan. He and his wife, Mrs. Lakshmi Ammal, came from a Hindu family that had long worshipped at the Santhanamari Amman Temple, which they themselves had helped establish in the village of Kundruvilaicheri (present‑day Kunnuvilai).

His transformative encounter with the Christian message happened unexpectedly. While returning from work, he stopped at Vadasery Market, where Salvation Army officers were preaching to a crowd. Deeply moved by their message, he surrendered his life to Christ and invited the officers to his village. This began a new chapter for both him and Kunnuvilai.

With his conversion, he adopted the name Deva Sundaram, while his wife took the name Nesamony—both becoming the first Christians and first Salvationists of the Kunnuvilai Corps.

Founding of the Kunnuvilai Corps

The officers who followed him to Kundruvilaicheri continued their outreach, and soon, the village became home to one of the oldest Salvation Army corps in the region—Kunnuvilai Corps. This work was strengthened in December 1892, when officers arrived as part of the famous “Boom March,” a noted evangelistic tour recorded in historical works such as Mukti Fauj and Munsellum Senai.

The early believers—mostly agricultural labourers and port workers—faced enormous challenges. Many converts, including Salvation Army officers, endured social opposition and death threats. Yet, they remained steadfast, laying a firm foundation for the mission’s growth.

A Family Devoted to Ministry

Sundaram and Nesamony’s devotion influenced their entire household. Their sons—Packiyanathan, Sundaram, and Thaveethu—also embraced Christianity and went on to carry significant responsibilities within the corps, further strengthening the ministry in Kunnuvilai.

Growth, Sacrifice, and Legacy

Despite poverty and persecution, the faith community grew. In 1916, the Army purchased land at the west end of Kundruvilaicheri and erected a simple thatched hut, which served as the meeting place for the next decade.

A major milestone occurred in 1926, when R.C. Braund, J.P., the Young People’s Sergeant Major of the Peterborough Corps (Canada & Bermuda Territory), dedicated a new hall in honour of General Bramwell Booth’s 70th anniversary—a sign of growing global solidarity.

Years later, on 25 November 2001, the corps purchased 73.96 cents of land near the Pazhaiyar river in Ozhuginasery to establish its cemetery, marking another chapter in its long history of community service.

Today, the Kunnuvilai Corps is home to 178 families, who continue the legacy of unwavering faith planted by Major Deva Sundaram and his family more than a century ago.

Enduring Impact

In 2013, the India South‑Eastern Territory hosted a grand Territorial Congress in Tirunelveli, honouring Major Deva Sundaram and his wife for their foundational role in establishing the Army’s mission. Their work embodies the enduring spirit of “Transformation through Faith & Service.”
